I’m currently working on a project that required a trip to my local building supply store. While at Rona, I was walking around the yard gathering lumber and loading it into my truck. I needed a few more supplies, so I left my truck in the yard and headed inside.

I grabbed a cart and started making my way through the familiar aisles—all while having a terrific conversation with an old friend on the phone.

Louie (his real name) and I hadn’t talked in years. Our lives had gone in different directions after I got married and moved away. What I was most interested in hearing about was his—and one of his son’s—recent conversion to Christ.

Let’s just say I was far more focused on hearing Louie’s salvation story than I was on paying attention to my shopping cart!

With my AirPods in, I told Louie to hold on for a moment while I asked an employee for help finding a product. I headed in the direction she pointed me, still engrossed in hearing how God had been working in Louie’s life.

Then I asked her a more serious question:

“If you met Jesus tonight—if you were in a car accident on the way home—what would you say to Him?”

I reminded her that simply believing that Jesus exists is not enough. Even the demons believe—and shudder. We need to respond to Christ with genuine repentance and faith.

Betty remained calm, but her eyes grew wide.

She then told Louie and me that 21 days earlier, she had been in a car accident. She said she had sensed that something else was happening around her. She had also had several recent encounters with Christians and couldn’t understand how God had brought me into her path that day.

I told her that God can overwhelm us with His love and bring people into our lives at precisely the right moment. King Jesus is still in control.

We parted ways knowing that both Louie and I would be praying for her.

Throughout the entire conversation, Louie was on the other end of the phone, “Yes and amen-ing” along with me. I pray that Betty will take the next steps toward our King and that the seed of God’s Word will take root in her heart.

But there was another part of this story that encouraged me deeply.

For some time, I’ve been praying for someone other than me to come into my brother’s life and faithfully point him to Jesus. Louie is actually closer to my brother than he is to me, and over the past few days, Louie has been reaching out to him.

Praise God!

What started as an ordinary trip to Rona became an unexpected gospel opportunity—and perhaps even an answer to prayer.

We don’t always know where our conversations will lead. We may think we’re simply running errands, shopping, working, or going about our ordinary routines. But God is at work in the little moments of our lives.

May we be willing to recognize those moments, step into the conversations God places before us, and share the knowledge and love of Christ—not only with those who don’t want to listen, but especially with those who do.

You never know when a simple conversation can become a divine appointment.
