Helping the World Find Hope in Haiti

TCC Field Report | January 16, 2010

As our team of radio reps gathered together to pray before we went out for our weekly witnessing, a thought occurred to me. Haiti had just experienced one of the greatest earthquakes in recorded history. The people there had lost everything: family, friends, all their possessions. It also occured to me that they would probably give anything to be where we are right now.

God has graciously blessed us with so much in this country, and what can we do to say thanks? Well, we could start by doing what He has commanded us to do – go out and preach His Gospel to every creature. Not that we need to pay Him back for His grace (and not that we every could), but if we are truly thankful to the God Who has given us so much, why would we not all want to please  Him by doing the very thing He has commanded us all to do?

What if tomorrow was our “Haiti experience”? What if we were in their shoes tomorrow? This overwhelming thought drove me, and the rest of our team, to step out in faith and talk about the Haiti earthquake with the people in our community and to more boldly share the Hope that is within us. If tomorrow we knew people were going to die in an earthquake here, where would these people be going when they died? Do they know the Lord Jesus Christ?

We had some great conversations with people and our hope was that they would see that in a blink of an eye, everything could be taken away…even their life! What are you hoping in, or more importantly, who are you hoping in? We need to plead with people to see that in their current state, they have no hope (or a false hope), and true hope comes only with repenting and trusting in Jesus Christ. So, if we lost everything here tomorrow like Haiti has lost today, we could rest in our eternal security even through a temporal disaster.

Welcome again to your for making the most of TCC Radio and our fourth and final episode of our transformational series on hope!

Click here for the audio version of this same message (2:38)

As we hope to give you quick tips for building bridges of conversation to invite your family and friends to tune in to this week’s program, let me share with you our lead script writer’s notes about it. Here’s what he says:

Our hope is not in bettering our condition. Our hope is not in changing our situation. Our hope is not even in reckoning on the facts of our faith. Our hope is that Jesus is coming to take us away to be with Him and give us eternal life with Him in glory!

Wow! How true! And with that in mind, here’s how you can use Hope – Part 4 as an ice-breaker and bridge-builder towards talking to those on your prayer list about salvation…

We would suggest that you find conversational common ground using the huge event of Barack Obama’s inauguration. You might say something like this: “Hey, why do you think that this Barack Obama inauguration event is so greatly anticipated?” Let them answer and then you can say something like: “The media is actually saying that people have a ‘reverence’ for Obama like no other president before because they are buying into his hope for his next 4-8 years in office. What’s your hope for the next 4-8  years?” Again, let them answer and then ask: “What’s your hope for the next 80-100 years?” They’ll likely say something like: “I’ll probably be dead then!” If/so they do, simply respond by asking: “Oh! Well, where do you think you will be then?”

After you take the time to dialogue about matters of eternity, you can let them know that you are affiliated with a wild reality radio show that surveys people on the streets about the spiritual aspects of what’s up in the world – and this week they are talking about hope!

Simply invite them to tune in to TCC Radio with you – broadcasting this Friday night at 7pm on Grace 105.9 FM in London and podcasted at tccradio.com anytime afterwards – so you can talk about the show together. Please also remember to send us your Gospel glory stories to radio@thecrosscurrent.com.

Thanks in advance for your partnership in the Gospel! Let’s humble ourselves in the sight of the Lord and may He graciously lift us up to that place whereby we will unashamedly share His Word with another lost someone that He has placed in our lives this week!

Welcome again to your for making the most of TCC Radio and Part 3 of our series on hope!

This week we’ll be taking you onto the streets with us to experience a full length interview with a young man named Dan about his idea of the world’s idea of hope and God’s idea of true hope – which is only found through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

And here’s how you can use the show as an evangelistic ice-breaker to invite people to tune in and listen so you can talk about God more together over coffee afterwards.

Our advice is to again pick one of the countless news items you’re hearing about like the economy , the war, the government, etc. and ask the non-Christians in your life how they have hope based on what’s going on in the world. Then you can ask them where they think true, lasting hope comes from?

From there you can let them know that you are affiliated with a very entertaining and informative reality radio show that surveys people on the streets about the spiritual aspects of what’s going on in the world – and this week they’re talking about hope!

Simply invite them to tune in to TCC Radio with you – broadcasted this Friday at 7pm on Grace 105.9 FM in London and podcasted at tccradio.com anytime afterwards so you can talk about the show together afterwards – and again please, please, please make sure to send us your Gospel glory stories to radio@thecrosscurrent.com.

I trust you know that all of us here at TCC thank God for you and pray that He will be your source of strength, grace,  and truth as you reach out in the matchless Name of His Son this week!
