Allow me to reminisce. It was Spring of 2007 and the scene was Victoria Park in the downtown core of London, Ontario (where our ministry is headquartered). TCC Senior Rep Jeff Mardling and I sat alone at a picnic table in the park dreaming together about “what if?”…
What if the entire church gathered together to worship and to be Christ’s witnesses in the heart of our city? What if the God-given gifts we read about in His Word converged to reflect the grace and truth of Christ to our community while keeping His Gospel at the centre of it all? What if…? What would that church look like?
It would look like Acts 2:42-47…and I believe that the Lord gave us a gracious glimpse of that church this past Friday night.
Let the record show that on Friday, September 16th, 2011, our great and sovereign God reminded us all that again that He does answer prayer – in His own time and in His own way, of course. Because not 50 feet from where Jeff and I sat four years previous yearning in the Lord about that church without walls, our home church gathered to worship together and to preach the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ in the public square – and it was a breathtakingly beautiful thing to behold.
Hundreds of Christ-followers came together to worship, preach the Word, and witness according to our various God-given gifts. Not only were many of the people The Cross Current has trained over the years actively sharing Christ as the night went on, but TCC Rep and extreme team leader, Steve Hodge also took the stage to share his own powerful Gospel testimonial of God’s faithfulness in his personal life and witness.

It was estimated that upwards of 25% of those in attendance were not regular attenders of Harvest, and many on our evangelism team testified to the fact that we spoke with many people who were not churchgoers at all! Well, rest assured that they’ve certainly heard the Good News now.

As if this “Church in the Park” event in the first part of the night was enough of a blessing, the Lord also graciously allowed our weekly witnessing team to then take turns open air preaching to the park passer-byes for a couple more hours afterward. Not only did our regular open air extraordinaires faithfully proclaim Christ on the streets, but we even had the privilege of leading yet another young evangelist to preach open air for the very first time! Congratulations to Matt Wagenaar for faithfully “breaking the sound barrier” this past Friday night. We thank God for you, brother!
Pat Belanger, a team leader from the Fishers of Men ministry at People’s Church in Wyoming, Ontario, also preached open air for his second time. Keep up the “God” work, Pat!;)

Doing the work of an evangelist
I want to close with a charge:
I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: preach the word; be ready in season and out of season;reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry. ~ 2 Timothy 4:1-5
“Do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.” Now, as you read this posting you might be thinking: “Yeah…well…Cory, you’re an evangelist but I’m not.” Not so fast! Because Paul’s charge here isn’t to BE an evangelist, but to DO THE WORK of an evangelist! Which is what? Preaching the Gospel! So this charge is actually a common call for all.

That’s why it’s my prayer (and our prayer as a ministry) that you would always be ready to preach the Word!
For His Glory,
